Beacons were lit across the nation last night as the Queen celebrated her 90th birthday – and we celebrated with her.

In Dunoon the community council arranged for the beacon on Castle Hill to be lit by Morag Smith, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Argyll and Bute, while in Inveraray the Duke of Argyll hosted tree planting and a barbecue in the castle grounds with the beacon being lit at the top of Dun na Cuaiche by another birthday girl, Freya Rodden, who turned 12 yesterday, assisted by her friend Izzy Crawford from Inveraray Primary School.

Dunoon Grammar School pipe band entertained the people who turned out for the event, which was much appreciated by everyone there.

Convenor of Dunoon Community Council, Kenny Matheson thanked them for being there as well as thanking everyone who had helped with the beacon – including local company Dae it Yersel’ for the wood and the Explorer Scout unit Argyll Explorers for setting up the beacon.

Hundreds of schoolchildren and their families and friends turned out at Inveraray for the celebrations based at Inveraray Castle.
