A driver who caused extensive damage to the commemorative lamppost, sea wall and electricity junction box at Lazaretto Point, Sandbank, was sentenced yesterday (May 5) at Dunoon Sheriff Court.

Barry Ballantyne of Old Kilpatrick offered a plea of guilty to causing the accident and to failing to report it to police on January 23 this year.

It took police officers two days to trace him.

Sheriff Ward fined him a total of £640 and disqualified him from diving for six months.

Defence agent Graeme Wright told the court that the 32-year-old building business owner would be approaching the local council offering to make good the damage he’d caused.

Full story in next Friday’s Dunoon Observer.
