Two arterial Argyll roads were closed for lengthy periods at the weekend after serious accidents – one resulting in a fatality.

On Saturday (June 18) a motor cyclist lost control of his Ducati machine on a bend on the A83 close to Inveraray. He came off and received an injury to his back and what Police Scotland describe as a ‘significant’ head injury.

The 54-year-old man was airlifted to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.

The road was closed between 4.30pm and 9pm as investigative work took place.

The following day a man died following a crash on the A82, near to Tarbet.

At around 1.20pm John Allan (51) of Lanark was driving an Opel GT car south on the A82 at Firkin Point, Tarbet when the car collided with a BMW car travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Allan was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but died a short time after admission.

His 51-year-old female passenger is currently being treated at the same hospital for minor injuries.

The road remained closed until 9pm.

Police Scotland say that relatives are aware and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Sergeant Paul MacPherson at the Divisional Road Policing Unit at Dunoon would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash. He can be contacted via telephone number 101.
