Local man Willie Deeney has just presented a cheque to the Glasgow Children’s Hospital as a result of taking part in this year’s Clyde Swim. Mr Deeney, who turned 58 on the day of the swim, had a special cake made for his by daughter Kelly Morris.

He said: “I took my inspiration from Paul Kerr – I watched the swimmers taking part last year and I thought ‘I can do that’.

“I have to thank everyone who had donated, helping to raise a fantastic £1,800 for the hospital’s renal unit.”

Willie prepared himself well for the open water swim, putting in a two mile swim at Dunoon’s Riverside pool everyday for three months.

He added: “My one-year-old grandson, Leo, was born with only one functioning kidney and the hospital has been so good to him.”

Willie pointed out his justgiving page was still open……

Our photos show the very special cake, and Willie with grandson Leo and Leo’s mum Claire at Glasgow Children’s Hosital
