As the newly-cleaned Burgh Hall building emerges, cocoon-like, from scaffolding, it was announced today that the trust which will operate the building has been awarded a National Lottery grant of more than £650,000.

A spokesperson for The Big Lottery, which made the award of £656,825, said: “The project will complete the renovation and refurbishment of Dunoon Burgh Halls and deliver a range of services for the community of Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula.

“The building will host flexible space for community use, promotion of the arts, opportunities for training and skills development, events, a licensed cafe and a programme of events designed to bring the community together.”

The building was destined for conversion into flats before a group of determined local people stepped in. Now, it is set to be an important cultural and social venue for Dunoon and Cowal.

Argyll and Bute MP Brendan O’Hara said: “This is a whopping success for the Dunoon Burgh Hall Trustees and a massive boost for the whole Dunoon and Cowal area.

“We are seeing again, people-power in action and the positive impact of a determined and proactive local community. I can’t wait to see the Hall complete and the morale boost this will have on the town.”

More in next week's Standard.
