Back in August we reported how a ten-year-old Blairmore girl was so touched by a charity’s tv appeal that she had decided to do something to help them.

Rhiyanna Stevely had been watching television when she saw an ad for the charity Water Aid. She was so upset to see children in other countries having to drink dirty water that she decided to do something about it.

Rhiyanna said at the time: “We just turn on the tap and clean water comes out any time we want. We take it for granted, but these children had only dirty water.”

To raise money for Water Aid, Rhiyanna organised not only a coffee morning but also a sponsored walk.

The walk took place on September 3 when Rhiyanna walked from Lazaretto Point to the Yachtsman’s Café and back, a total of 10k (5k each way).

The coffee morning was held in Strone Church Hall on September 24, where Rhiyanna was helped by members of the congregation and put on a fantastic event with lots of home baking, a tombola and a raffle.

So far her sponsored walk has raised £778 and her coffee morning £353.84, making a total £1,131.84.

This is enough to provide a sanitation block for 250 school children, as well as 7 hygienic hands free taps to help a hospital.

Rhyanna’s proud mum Shel Stevely told the Standard: “She knows she has done well but truly doesn't know the enormity of what she has done!”

A fantastic effort and well done to Rhiyanna.
