Today (Wednesday) at 11am there were intimate ceremonies of remembrance at war memorials throughout the UK to mark Armistice Day, marking the 1918 armistice signed between the Allies of WWI and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front

The armistice took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning—the ‘eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’.

Towns and villages in Argyll and Bute marked the occasion in their own ways.

In Dunoon there was a gathering at the Town’s war memorial on the edge of the Castle Gardens, and services were held at Dunoon Grammar School.

Argyll and Bute MP Brendan O’Hara led the school service, which he described as ‘beautiful and extremely moving’.

Mr O’Hara delivered a speech firstly to the school’s junior pupils in the first of two services, and then again during the more in depth service for the senior pupils. He was then asked to lay a wreath by the schools remembrance plaques -which honour former staff and pupils who died in the first and second world wars.

Speaking after the event, Mr O’Hara said: “It was an honour and a privilege to be invited to speak at Dunoon Grammar School’s remembrance service.

“It’s great that the school is so engaged with this, as it is vitally important that our young people do not forget, nor take for granted, the sacrifice that was made for us all.

“The greatest honour we can bestow on those who have given their lives to protect and defend our freedom must be to ensure that we work tirelessly to achieve the peace they sacrificed for.

“I would like to thank Mr Mitchell, and his staff and pupils, who are a credit to the school, and the local community.”
